A Wild New Year's Eve in Barbados: From Monkeys to Ocean Caves

Updated: Jan 2

What started as an unexpected private tour turned into one of our most memorable New Year's Eve adventures! With our middle daughter recuperating at the resort from an upset stomach (thankfully feeling better by the evening), three of us set out to explore Barbados through another expertly arranged Project Expedition tour.

Our first stop at the Barbados Nature Reserve brought pure magic, especially for my 12-year-old son. Wild green monkeys roamed freely, some bold enough to tug playfully at clothing! The absolute highlight came when the reserve workers set out fruit for these fascinating creatures. Watching my son's face light up as he carefully offered grapes to the monkeys was, in his words, "the highlight of my entire life!" Of course, we maintained appropriate caution and distance, respecting that these are indeed wild animals. The reserve also houses several impressive tortoises that ambled around the reserve, very slowly..., adding another fascinating layer to our wildlife encounters.

The Animal Flower Cave proved to be another breathtaking stop - quite literally! We were fortunate with our timing, as the cave had been completely flooded just the day before due to the turbulent ocean. While swimming wasn't permitted today due to high tide, watching the ocean waves crash against the cave's opening created an unforgettable scene. The rugged cave floor beneath our feet added to the authentic experience. I couldn't resist purchasing a handmade clay ceramic figurine crafted by a local artisan that resembles the statue outside of the Animal Flower Cave - the perfect keepsake from this unique spot.

Our route back included a stop at historic Cherry Tree Hill, a stunning vantage point with a rich past. Originally lined with cherry trees during colonial times, the hill was later transformed into part of the sugar plantation's operations. Today, the hill's approach is flanked by towering mahogany trees, planted over 250 years ago to replace the cherry trees. The sweeping vista offers breathtaking views across Barbados's eastern coastline where the Atlantic waves meet the shore.

Near Cherry Tree Hill stands the Morgan Lewis Windmill, one of the Caribbean's last remaining complete sugar mills and a testament to Barbados's sugar production heritage. This impressive Dutch-designed windmill, built in the early 1700s, had been carefully preserved and serves as a reminder of the island's sugar production history. The resent 2021 Hurricane Elsa damanged three of the windmill blades, just after they had been replaced from a previous hurricane.

Back at the resort, we were greeted by our long-awaited luggage (finally!) though the day's adventures weren't quite done - a overpacked room safe required some help from maintenance to access. (I won't make that mistake again). At this point, we can only laugh at the small misadventures that keep spicing up our trip! We did get to witness a beautiful wedding overlooking the Atlantic Ocean from our resort balcony.

The evening transformed into a perfect blend of family time and romance. While our capable 16-year-old supervised the younger ones at the resort's all-inclusive buffet, decked out for festivities, my husband and I enjoyed a wonderful New Year's Eve dinner at Castle View restaurant, overlooking the ruins of the historic Sam Lord's Castle. The castle, once home to the notorious Sam Lord and later a luxury hotel, has a fascinating history spanning centuries. Though a devastating fire in 2010 destroyed much of the structure, its stabilized ruins now stand as a haunting reminder of Barbados's colorful past, tastefully incorporated into the modern resort's design.

Now, as I write this, we're heading down to ring in 2025 poolside, with music, celebration, and the warm Barbados breeze.

Travel Advisor Tips:

  • The Barbados Nature Reserve is a must-visit for families, but remember these are wild animals - respect their space and follow staff guidelines

  • When visiting the Animal Flower Cave, check tide conditions as they affect access and swimming possibilities

  • Having older teens can be a blessing for parents wanting some romantic time during family vacations - take advantage of resort amenities that allow for safe separation

  • And apparently, don't overpack your room safe! 😅

Here's to new adventures in the New Year! Stay tuned for more updates from our Barbados journey.
