Barbados Travel Guide: Essential Tips & Takeaways

After spending New Year's week in Barbados with my family, here are my top insights as both a traveler and travel advisor:

Essential Planning Tips: Payment & Currency Guidelines

  • Critical: Barbados taxis are cash-only operations.

  • While they, and most businesses accept USD, consider using local currency when possible.

  • Know your credit card PIN for ATM withdrawals - you may need it for unexpected cash needs.

  • Plan ahead for taxi fares to avoid cash flow issues.

  • Keep some cash on hand for local vendors and small purchases.

Packing & Luggage Tips (Learned the Hard Way!)

  • ALWAYS pack a complete change of clothes and essential toiletries in your carry-on.

  • Air tags are invaluable for tracking delayed luggage, though remember they only work when near other devices and thus, you will not know the exact location when they are in flight.

  • It was our first-time using packing cubes and they're game-changers for organizing clothes and separating clean from dirty.

  • Pack swimming gear in your carry-on for beach destinations...just in case!

  • Don't forget contact solution and glasses if you wear contacts!

Transportation & Tours

  • Skip the rental car - driving on the left side with minimal street signs and unfamiliar driving customs can add unnecessary stress.

  • Small group or private tours provide invaluable local insights.

  • Our tours delivered exceptional experiences, from snorkeling with attentive guides to discovering hidden island gems.

  • Local drivers share cultural context and historical details you'd miss on self-guided adventures.

All-Inclusive Resort Experience

  • While the convenience of pre-paid meals takes the stress out of vacation planning, don't let this stop you from exploring local restaurants.

  • All-inclusive resorts are great for families, especially with teens who can grab snacks or meals independently; however, if you prefer more personalized service, boutique accomodations will be key.

  • Consider booking some special dinners beyond the buffet, like our memorable New Year's Eve at Castle View.

  • Strategic location is key - carefully weigh your resort's location against your planned activities and budget. Transportation costs and travel time can significantly impact both your vacation experience and overall expenses.

Managing Expectations

  • Wildlife sightings aren't guaranteed (we never did see those leatherback turtles!)

  • Weather can affect activities (like the Animal Flower Cave being flooded).

  • Be flexible and open to unexpected adventures.

  • Watch for tourist traps, like our beach umbrella rental experience at Carlisle Bay.

Must-Visit Spots

  • Barbados Wildlife Reserve for monkey encounters

  • Harrison's Cave for underground wonders

  • St. Nicholas Abbey for historical insights

  • Animal Flower Cave for dramatic ocean views

  • Carlisle Bay for family beach time

  • Harbor Lights Show for authentic entertainment

Travel Advisor Pro Tips

  • Book through reliable travel partners for better experiences and problem resolution

  • Consider trip insurance for international travel - we will be using ours to cover the extra items we had to purchase due to delayed luggage.

  • Don't overpack your room safe! 😅

  • Plan a mix of structured tours and free time

  • Include both resort time and local experiences in your itinerary

The key to a successful Barbados vacation is balance - between resort convenience and local exploration, structured tours and relaxation time, and planned activities and spontaneous adventures. While things might not always go as planned (delayed luggage, anyone?), it's these unexpected moments that often create the most memorable family stories.
